Perplexity
Perplexity AI · Ranked #5 of 12 in AI Candidate Sourcing Tools
Search API and Agent API with a people_search tool ($5 per 1,000 invocations), Python and TypeScript SDKs and a public status page; the legacy Sonar endpoint is being retired and the developer surface is general web research, not a candidate database.
Agent builders who want a grounded research and people-lookup backend inside a general LLM pipeline

Overview
Perplexity exposes a Search API ($5.00 per 1,000 requests, $1.00 for fast search) and an Agent API in which the model decides when to call tools. The sourcing-relevant tool is people_search ($5 per 1,000 invocations), which finds people by name, role, company, education, skill or location and returns publicly available professional details, with documented token-budget parameters and a usage policy barring doxxing and unauthorized background screening. It sits inside Agent API requests, so cost also includes model tokens, and results are model-mediated rather than a filterable candidate index. The older Sonar chat-completions endpoint carries a deprecation notice (support stated until September 27, 2026) while the migration overview still describes it as supported, which is a documentation inconsistency we could not resolve.
Documentation is organised, with an SDK overview, a Sonar-to-Agent migration guide, tool references and an error-handling guide. Official SDKs exist for Python (perplexityai) and Node.js/TypeScript. A public status page (status.perplexity.com) shows 100% API uptime for July-October 2026, though no SLA was found on the pages reviewed. Self-serve key creation and published per-request prices make onboarding straightforward, but we found no free credits and no numeric rate limits on the pages read. We did not verify an official MCP server, so none is counted. No G2/Trustpilot/Reddit developer sentiment was retrieved.
How this score is derived
The APIbenchmarks Index is a weighted sum of four dimensions, each scored on an absolute 0–100 reference scale. See the methodology for every mapping.
| Dimension | Score | Weight | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documentation & DXdocs.perplexity.ai has an SDK overview, a pricing guide, a tool reference for people_search with parameters and limits, and a Sonar-to-Agent migration guide; clear, but the Sonar retirement date appears in a banner and conflicts with the migration overview. | 82 | 30% | 24.6 |
| Reliabilitystatus.perplexity.com reports 100% API uptime July-October 2026 (short window); no formal SLA or incident history was reviewed, and third-party guides note that degraded periods occur. Scored conservatively. | 78 | 25% | 19.5 |
| Ecosystem & SDKsOfficial Python (perplexityai) and TypeScript (@perplexity-ai/perplexity_ai) clients with sync and async support; no official MCP, Go or Java SDK was verified. | 78 | 25% | 19.5 |
| AccessibilitySelf-serve API console keys and a published price list (Search $5 per 1k, people_search $5 per 1k), but no free credits were found and rate limits are tiered by spend; people_search cost stacks on model tokens. | 80 | 20% | 16.0 |
