Overview

Onfido, acquired by Entrust in April 2024 and now marketed as Entrust Identity Verification (Entrust IDV), is one of the longest-established global identity verification (KYC) providers. Its platform combines document verification, biometric/facial similarity checks, NFC chip reading, anti-fraud signals, and trusted data-source lookups, all orchestrated through a no-code workflow builder (Onfido Studio) and delivered via Smart Capture SDKs and a REST API. The technical core is Onfido Atlas, an AI decisioning engine the company says is built on more than 10,000 micro-models covering global ID document types and refined on tens of millions of checks per year. Onfido positions itself at the enterprise end of the market, banks, fintechs, marketplaces, gambling/gaming, and regulated onboarding flows, rather than as a low-touch, self-serve developer tool.

Where Onfido wins is breadth and maturity: extensive global document coverage, a polished capture experience with NFC support, strong orchestration via Studio, well-maintained official SDKs (iOS, Android, Web, React Native, Flutter) and API client libraries (Java, Node, PHP, Python, Ruby), and consistent analyst/peer recognition (G2 Leader in identity verification across multiple consecutive quarters, ~4.4/5 on G2). The Entrust acquisition adds a deeper enterprise security and PKI portfolio around it. Published vendor metrics are aggressive, 95% of checks completed in under 10 seconds, 90%+ first-time pass rates on Smart Capture, and a claimed false-acceptance rate as low as 0.01%.

The weaknesses are equally concrete. Pricing is fully quote-based and opaque, frequently structured around large annual commitments (reports of ~$10k minimums and median annual spend in the ~$60k range), which makes it expensive and hard to evaluate for small or low-volume teams. End-user (B2C) sentiment on Trustpilot is markedly poor, recurring complaints about false rejections of valid documents, harsh selfie/liveness checks, camera/app failures, and inconsistent processing speed, even as B2B buyers on G2/Capterra rate it well. The rebrand to Entrust IDV has also fragmented documentation and naming across legacy onfido.com and new identity.entrust.com domains, and the Jan 2026 v100 SDK redesign introduces a migration burden for existing integrators. Net: a strong enterprise-grade choice with real depth, but not the cheapest or most frictionless option, and worth piloting against its real-world rejection behavior.
