Image generation API benchmark 2026: OpenAI, Google Imagen, fal.ai, Replicate and more
OpenAI Images scored 90.5 on the APIbenchmarks Index, ahead of Google Imagen / Gemini Image at 88.2 and fal.ai at 82.6. Ideogram was last of seven at 61.2.
OpenAI Images (gpt-image) ranks first among the seven image generation APIs in the APIbenchmarks Index, with a score of 90.5 and grade A. Google Imagen / Gemini Image is second at 88.2, also grade A, and fal.ai is third at 82.6. Replicate follows at 80.2, Stability AI at 72.7, Black Forest Labs (FLUX) at 67.4 and Ideogram at 61.2. The top spot is not a clean sweep. Google leads on reliability, fal.ai leads on accessibility, and Ideogram is the only API in the group with a grade D.
The index scores four things for every API: documentation, reliability, ecosystem and accessibility. It does not score the images themselves, so a high score means an API is well documented, dependable and easy to get started with, not that its pictures look better.
The short version:
- OpenAI Images leads at 90.5, 2.3 points ahead of Google Imagen / Gemini Image at 88.2. The gap to third place is 7.9 points.
- Google leads reliability at 95 against 92 for OpenAI. fal.ai leads accessibility at 88 against 84 for OpenAI.
- Ideogram is last at 61.2, 29.3 points behind the leader. Its lowest sub-score is ecosystem at 50.
Which image generation API has the highest score?
OpenAI Images, at 90.5. Google Imagen / Gemini Image is 2.3 points behind, and those two are the only grade A results. Everything else is grade B or lower.

| Provider | Index score | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Images (gpt-image) | 90.5 | A |
| Google Imagen / Gemini Image | 88.2 | A |
| fal.ai | 82.6 | B |
| Replicate | 80.2 | B |
| Stability AI | 72.7 | C |
| Black Forest Labs (FLUX) | 67.4 | C |
| Ideogram | 61.2 | D |
The table has three tiers. OpenAI and Google sit within 2.3 points of each other. fal.ai and Replicate sit 2.4 points apart, 5.6 and 8.0 points behind Google. The last three are spread out, with 7.5 points between Replicate and Stability AI, 5.3 between Stability AI and Black Forest Labs, and 6.2 between Black Forest Labs and Ideogram.
How do the APIs compare on documentation and reliability?
Documentation and reliability tell two different stories. OpenAI has the best documentation score at 94, and Google has the best reliability score at 95.

| Provider | Documentation | Reliability |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Images (gpt-image) | 94 | 92 |
| Google Imagen / Gemini Image | 88 | 95 |
| fal.ai | 85 | 84 |
| Replicate | 86 | 78 |
| Stability AI | 76 | 68 |
| Black Forest Labs (FLUX) | 72 | 66 |
| Ideogram | 68 | 62 |
Replicate has better documentation than fal.ai, 86 against 85, but fal.ai has the better reliability score by 6 points, 84 against 78. That difference is what puts fal.ai ahead of Replicate overall. Stability AI, Black Forest Labs and Ideogram all score under 80 on both, and Ideogram is lowest on both, at 68 and 62.
Which API is easiest to start with?
fal.ai, with an accessibility score of 88. OpenAI is next at 84, then Stability AI at 82 and Google at 80. Black Forest Labs scores 74, Replicate 72 and Ideogram 64.

| Provider | Ecosystem | Accessibility |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Images (gpt-image) | 90 | 84 |
| Google Imagen / Gemini Image | 88 | 80 |
| fal.ai | 74 | 88 |
| Replicate | 82 | 72 |
| Stability AI | 66 | 82 |
| Black Forest Labs (FLUX) | 58 | 74 |
| Ideogram | 50 | 64 |
The two columns do not move together for every API. fal.ai is third overall but has only the fourth best ecosystem score at 74, 16 points below OpenAI. Stability AI is the reverse case. Its accessibility of 82 is third best, but its ecosystem score of 66 is fifth. Ideogram is the only API below 65 on accessibility.
How was this benchmark measured?
This is an index result, not a hands-on test. There is no fixed panel of prompts and no grading of images for this category. The scores come from the APIbenchmarks Index.
- Four sub-scores. Each API has a documentation, reliability, ecosystem and accessibility score, and an overall index score with a letter grade.
- Seven APIs. OpenAI Images (gpt-image), Google Imagen / Gemini Image, fal.ai, Replicate, Stability AI, Black Forest Labs (FLUX) and Ideogram.
- Same date. All seven entries were last verified on 27 June 2026.
- Pricing and free access. These are recorded from each provider's own published terms and are shown in the next section.
Two limits matter. First, the index says nothing about image quality, prompt following or latency, so a high-scoring API can still lose on your use case. Second, prices and free tiers change, and these entries are from June. The methodology page explains how the index is built.
How do the image generation APIs compare on price and free access?
The index records how each API is sold. Prices are the ranges listed in each entry.
| Provider | Pricing model | Free access |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Images (gpt-image) | Per token, about $0.02 to $0.25 per image | None, pay per use |
| Google Imagen / Gemini Image | Per image or per token, $0.02 to $0.15 | Free AI Studio key and a limited free tier |
| fal.ai | Per image or per megapixel, $0.003 to $0.04 | $20 free credit on signup |
| Replicate | Per image or GPU second, $0.003 to $0.04 | None, limited playground only |
| Stability AI | Per image, credit based, $0.03 to $0.08 | 25 free credits, about $0.25, on signup |
| Black Forest Labs (FLUX) | Per megapixel, credit based, $0.015 to $0.07 | None, prepaid credits at $0.01 each |
| Ideogram | Per image, $0.03 to $0.10 | None on the API, web app has 10 credits a week |
The cheapest listed ranges belong to fal.ai and Replicate, both at $0.003 to $0.04. OpenAI has the highest top of range at $0.25 and no free access. Google and fal.ai both give you a way to try the API before paying, which fits their accessibility scores of 80 and 88. How to benchmark image generation APIs yourself
The index tells you which APIs are easy to adopt. It cannot tell you which one draws the picture you need. Take 20 to 50 prompts from your own product, such as product shots, text in images or edits of existing pictures. Send the same prompts to two or three APIs from the top of the table, and have the people who will use the output score the results blind. Record cost per usable image, not cost per call, because an API that needs two tries per image costs twice the listed price. For a worked example of grading against known answers, see the company enrichment benchmark, and the image generation category page lists every API in this post.
